Black River Campout

We will be going to the Black River for camping, swimming, and fishing.  We are leaving from the church at 5:00 PM and we expect to return before dinner on Saturday.
Boy Scouts are encouraged to travel to and from activities in full scout uniform (uniform shirt, uniform pants OR uniform shorts with uniform socks, and uniform belt).  Please arrive at the church in uniform.

We will be camping near our cars. The boys should bring:
Swimming suit
Sunblock
Towel
Sleeping bag
Tent OR tarp
Camp Chair
Personal Toiletries
Personal First Aid kit
Change of dry clothes and extra socks
$10 for lunch and permit on the trip home
Utensils for eating
flashlight

Each boy should either eat dinner before we leave or plan on cooking themselves a late dinner at camp. The boys should plan on cooking their own breakfast. As a reminder, many of the boys in the troop are still working on their cooking merit badge. A square meal planned and cooked on this camp-out can pass off the outdoor meal requirement.

Fossil Springs Backpacking Trip

This Friday we will be going backpacking to a camp site in Fossil Springs.  This is the same location that we have been to recently, but this time we will be parking the cars at the Flume Trail head and hiking into our camp group, which is about 5 miles in.

The boys will need to carry everything on their back, so please make sure they have a backpack.  Please let us know if they need one, there are a few families that have an extra one that can be loaned out.

They should bring:

Swimming suit
Sunblock
Towel
Sleeping bag (tent OR/or tarp)
Personal Toiletries
Personal First Aid kit
Change of dry clothes and extra socks
Money for lunch on the trip home
Utensils for eating
flashlight
Food

The boys have been working on their cooking merit badge, and one of the requirements is for them to plan and prepare a trail meal.  Please make sure that they bring their own food and have followed the guidelines for good nutrition (see the post on the cooking merit badge).  If their food needs to be cooked, they should bring their own trail stove.  None of the troop gear will be available during the hike (but gear can be checked out ahead of time if needed).

We will be leaving Friday, but we do not yet have a time decided on that we will meet at the church.  We are still looking for fathers to come and our departure time will depend on when people can get off work (so we might leave as late as 6:00 PM).  I will make another post to this website once we have confirmed our departure time.  We should be home late Saturday afternoon.

Cooking Merit Badge

We are currently working on the Cooking Merit Badge in the troop.  This merit badge is fairly involved and will require work at home and on camp outs.  The learning portion of the merit badge that we are going over in troop meetings can be reviewed here:

Cooking Merit Badge Powerpoint

The boys were given a planning packet to help them record their notes and plan their meals.  If they lose it, a replacement can be downloaded here:

Cooking Merit Badge Packet

The boys will need to plan many meals and cook some of them at home, then report back.  This coming week we will price out the menus that they planned.

Meals should be planned following the nutritional principles found on this website that teaches about good food choices:

Helaman's Camp Summer Camp

Summer Camp is fast approaching. We will be leaving June 23rd and returning on the 28th.  The boys will need a medical review from a doctor (physical), a link to the medical form can be found here:

Boys should be working on their Men of Valor and Helaman's awards.  The can also start working on the pre-requisites for the merit badges they wish to earn.  For detailed information on Camp, these awards, and everything the boys will need to bring (and not bring) please refer to the Camp information packet prepared by the stake linked here:
